We have all been inundated with several motivational quotes and stories of success as defined by the media or the world. I realised that the constant emphasis on “becoming successful” has created a misleading narrative that success is a fixed destination rather than a dynamic and multifaceted journey.
Success is not a destination we arrive at, but a path we walk every day. It’s a journey of growth, learning, and progress, not a finite state we achieve and then maintain! By focusing on the journey, we find fulfilment and purpose in the present moment, rather than constantly striving for an elusive future goal.
Success is a continuous process, not a milestone to be reached. It’s the sum of our daily efforts, choices, and experiences. By embracing the journey, we find joy in the progress, not just the outcome.
The pursuit of success is a lifelong journey, not a sprint to the finish line. It’s a path of self-improvement, resilience, and determination, where every step forward is a success in itself!
The continued narrow focus on some generally accepted targets or forms as the definition of success can be linked to a lot of issues in our world today. I have a few listed here to help us put ourselves in check and appreciate where we are:
1. Unrealistic expectations: We don’t have to feel like we are failing if we haven’t achieved a certain level of success, as defined by others. That’s putting ourselves under unnecessary pressure. Celebrate each win and progress.
2. Overlooked milestones: We may neglect to celebrate our accomplishments and recognize our progress because we are too focused on the next goal. Breathe!
3. Burnout and dissatisfaction: The relentless pursuit of success can lead to exhaustion and discontent, as we may feel like we are never “there” yet. There will always be a next “there” to be reached. Reaching all the “theres” is as good as being dead!.
4. Comparison and competition: The emphasis on external validation can foster unhealthy comparisons and competition rather than encouraging personal growth and self-improvement. Compare apples to apples – circumstances, leverage, associations, network, parental supports, education, family pedigree, etc. If at all you want to have a healthy benchmark of your progress! Have a holistic view.
5. Neglect of other aspects of life: The singular focus on a certain success metric might lead to neglect of other important aspects of life, like our relationships, well-being, and personal fulfilment. It’s a big bag filled with many pieces and not just one spectrum.
Remember, success is a continuous process with various levels, forms, and definitions. It’s essential to recognize and appreciate progress, celebrate achievements, and find joy in the journey itself. We are not only successful as entrepreneurs, celebrities, artists, or footballers. We are as successful as our personal goals and ambitions, not external metrics.
By reframing our understanding of success, we can all cultivate a more balanced, fulfilling, and inclusive approach to life.
Let’s promote a more nuanced and inclusive definition of success, one that acknowledges and values:
– Personal growth and progress
– Diverse forms of achievement
– Well-being and happiness
– Meaningful relationships and connections
– Continuous learning and self-improvement
– Resilience and perseverance
By doing so, we can empower individuals to define and pursue their own unique paths to success without feeling pressured by external expectations or comparisons.

Have a great day.
