To a large extent, life is like a normal distribution curve. Infact, the normal distribution curve has been alluded to be the most important probability distribution in statistics since it fits many natural phenomenon like IQ Score, Height, Income distribution, birth weight, shoe size, tossing a coin , rolling a dice, risk and returns in the stock market and students scores. Interesting, right? This means that if you play your cards well, practice patience, put in the work etc. You will at least get in the middle in terms of success. Now, this is not an encouragement for the average life, or mediocrity but a call for 2 actions in a world that is fast paced and impatient and everyone wants to be a “Jeff Bezos” for the wealth only and not the impact to the society:

Accept your reality, analyse your environment and put in the work

The popular song by Teni comes to mind here “” cos my papa no be Dangote or Adeleke, but we go dey ok””. I like the reality expressed in the song, I am not as advantaged as the children of Dangote or Adeleke, but I will work hard and do my best and be OK. Bringing it back to life choices, you must come to this level of reality, what are my advantages and disadvantages?? Work around this while finding opportunities for upgrade. For example, you have studied a course with limited opportunities in Nigeria with attendant high population and unemployment. Your father is not Dangote and you have not yet built a strong network in a chosen field, then you should fight for nothing less than a 2.1 in that course of study to improve your chances. Peradventure you missed this, another level of accepting reality is upgrading on the disadvantage. This is not when you begin to cherry pick job or entrepreneurial opportunities. Be realistic. Truth is, this is not limited to Nigeria, this acceptance and a need to do what it will take to be successful in any environment you find yourself is what has led a lot of Nigerians having studied the arts or social sciences becoming nurses or doctors in other countries and reverse being the case in Nigeria. It is what it is!!

Do not rush, be patient, you will get in the middle of the curve with dedication and discipline

I speak about patience and getting in the middle due to the increase in social hyping. Do not deceive yourself, only a few entrepreneurs get in the league of the Bezos of this world. Do not get into the buzz and lose focus. The goal here is becoming successful, which is defined by you only. You may change strategies to get there or redefine it but stay on that course, even if you do not get to the outlines, you will get in the middle and be OK in Teni’s voice.

Have a great weekend.
